Director: Dave Franco
Starring: Alison Brie, Sean Ellis, Julie Hagerty
Running Time: 106 minutes
Synopsis: In Los Angeles, Ally (Alison Brie) is disappointed when her television show is cancelled. She heads to her hometown of Leavenworth, Washington to visit her mother Libby (Julie Hagerty). Ally soon bumps into her ex-lover from 10 years ago Sean (Jay Ellis) and senses a spark. After a fun night of reminiscing, she is shocked to learn Sean is about to marry musician Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons). Ally sets out to disrupt the wedding, but then starts to grow fond of Cassidy.
What Works Well: The Leavenworth locations are picturesque, and one sequence involving a cat's vomit raises a chuckle.
What Does Not Work As Well: In this insipid echo of the already miserable My Best Friend's Wedding, the colour palette is a depressing washout, but maybe this is intentional to obscure the dross. In words (vulgar), actions (foolish), and motivations (selfish), all the adults demonstrate the maturity of high schoolers most-likely-to-fail. The dialogue in the first-draft level script is asinine, the faux-shocked performances not much better, and the soundtrack music selection is an insufferable mix of whiney, bland, and obvious.
Conclusion: Neither funny nor romantic, this is a sorry clump of emotionally stunted people behaving badly.
