Movie Review: The Idea Of You (2024)

Genre: Romance
Director: Michael Showalter
Starring: Anne Hathaway, Nicholas Galitzine, Ella Rubin
Running Time: 116 minutes

Synopsis: In Los Angeles, divorced art gallery owner Solène (Anne Hathaway) is turning 40. She accompanies her teen daughter Izzy (Ella Rubin) to the Coachella music festival, where Solène meets music star Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), a 24 year-old member of a wildly popular boy band. Despite the age difference a romance ensues, and Solène discovers that the glamorous world of a global pop star can be both exhilarating and unforgiving.

What Works Well: Robinne Lee's book (adapted by Jennifer Westfeldt and director Michael Showalter) comes to the screen with a commitment to exploring the turbulence of passion. The narrow focus on Solène and Hayes encourages significant depth, as they both navigate the hazards of age difference, trust issues, contrasting lifestyles, and a fishbowl relationship. Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine dive below superficial representations of divorced mom and pop idol to find the flawed but capable humans within.

What Does Not Work As Well: The long running time places a heavy load on just the two main characters, and encompasses several break-ups and reconciliations in what becomes a predictable rhythm. The romance obstacles fall into the obtusely contrived category, including failing to anticipate the social media storm, the reactions of Hayes' friends and fans, and the impact on Izzy, who herself has outgrown Hayes' appeal.

Conclusion: They are called boy bands for a reason.
